This Day In History: Professional Wrestler, Actor, Singer John Cena Was Born

John Cena was born on April 23, 1977 in West Newbury, Massachusetts. According to John Cena Sr.'s story, the birth was not without some complications. Tiny John was born with the umbilical cord wrapped three times around his neck, which was obviously dangerous to his life. Despite such a situation, nothing serious happened to him and everything ended happily, without any subsequent consequences. His parents are Carol (nee Lupien) and John Cena Sr. His grandfather from his mother's side - Tony Lupien was a baseball player. He has 4 brothers, one older - Stephen, and three younger - Dan, Matt and Sean.

Generally, pro wrestling in his family from the very beginning was the main entertainment they watched together. Being kids, they created a makeshift ring out of mattresses in the basement, fighting on them for hand-drawn championship belts on cardboard. John Cena was the holder of one of the belts at the time, being the overall champion of the Basement Wrestling Federation (his invented federation). John Cena started his adventure in the gym very early. At the age of 12, John asked his parents for his first weightlifting bench. And it was his dream Christmas present at the time. By the time he graduated from high school, Price was pretty amped up, which allowed him to compete in bodybuilding competitions.

As a devout Christian, he attended Central Catholic High School in Lawrence before transferring to Cushing Academy. This was a private boarding school in Ashburnham. After high school, John went to Springfield College, where he played Division 3 American soccer as a center, wearing the number 54 on his back. It was this number that could be seen on many of John Cena's WWE products. Despite the fact that it was even going well for him, he decided not to pursue a career in it, and why? He simply decided that he was 'way too small'. In 1998, he graduated from Springfield College with a degree in exercise physiology and body movement.

When he finished college, Cena moved to California where he decided to pursue a career in bodybuilding, working as a limo driver in between. However, he was quickly spotted by Mike Bell (known today for being the 'star' of the steroid documentary 'Bigger, Stronger, Faster'), who was involved in pro wrestling at the time. And that's how he got his start in Ultimate Pro Wrestling - at the Ultimate University school, which was run by Rick Bassman. Some of his moments from this period were shown on the Discovery Channel's Inside Pro Wrestling School program. In UPW he created his first gimmick, well known to all - The Prototype. '50% man, 50% machine and 100% chaos', this represented his gimmick.

On November 5, 1999, he made his debut at UPW's live event, where, wearing the Prototype gimmick, he won a bout against Jobbers-R-Us in a handicap match. He generally fought all of his bouts at this type of event, where he fought singles matches, and his balance was as follows - 4 wins and 4 losses. On April 27, 2000 he won the first championship in his career, which was the UPW Heavyweight Championship. At the event he defeated the then champion Smelly. After three successful championship defenses, the fourth was unsuccessful. On May 24 at Invasion, he lost to former UPW Champion Smelly.

After losing the championship, he never got the chance to regain it. He then fought 14 singles matches until the end of the year, only losing one of them. His opponents included such fighters as Crash Holly, Christopher Daniels and Samoa Joe.

In 2001, he signed a developmental contract with the WWF (WWE), so his role in Ultimate Pro Wrestling practically diminished. He fought only two matches. On February 21 at Warzone, he lost to Keijia Sakoda, while at When World Collide, which took place on March 14, he defeated CW Anderson.

His last fight for UPW came on January 8, 2003 against Frankie Kazarian. While already under the WWE, he performed under his normal name. The match was won by Kazarian by disqualification as the referee saw Cena hit his opponent with a kasket.

In between his time in Ultimate Pro Wrestling, John Cena made guest appearances in other federations. We'll start with the dark matches in WWF/WWE that he participated in before Vince McMahon's official appearances. He had his first dark match on October 10, 2000 before SmackDown, where he was defeated by Mikey Richardson as Prototype. His second fight under the WWF banner was on January 9, 2001, also before the start of SmackDown, where this time he managed to defeat Aaron Aguilera. On March 13, he had his third singles match, which he also won, but the identity of his opponent was unknown. On October 29, 2001, John Cena appeared in a WWF Jakked dark match before the tapings of RAW, where he teamed with Rico Costantino to defeat Brock Lesnar and Shelton Benjamin for the OVW Southern Tag Team belts. He had three more dark matches in 2002 - on June 3 before RAW he lost a bout to Shelton Benjamin, on June 10 before RAW he defeated Scott Vick, and on June 17 before RAW he was defeated again by Shelton Benjamin.

Going back to 2001...John Cena appeared in All Pro Wrestling, where he appeared twice in 3vs.3 tag team bouts, both of which were victorious. He also teamed with Frankie Kazarian on two occasions.

He also had a small number of fights in Heartland Wrestling Association, where he had 4 fights in 2001. It was in this federation that the first ever duel between John Cena and Randy Orton took place, which took place on August 9, 2001 during the 4th Annual Brian Pillman Memorial Show. The bout was won by Randy Orton. Prototype also appeared in the second ever HWA episode on TV (September 29, 2001), where he was defeated by Russ Haas via disqualification.

Cena then turned to National Alliance Wrestling, which for a time held joint events with Ohio Valley Wrestling. It was during one of these events, on June 27, 2001 at Last Dance, that he made his debut in the then developmental WWF (WWE). Teaming with Mr. Black, they lost to Mark Henry and Big Show. On August 15, 2001, John Cena along with Rico Costantino 'received' the OVW Southern tag team belts as they had no owners. The first championship defense did not occur until a month later, where the champions defeated Chris Michaels and Sean Casey. It finally came time for the last joint event between the NWA and OVW, which took place on September 26, 2001. Prototype and Rico defeated Damien and Payne in a non-title match.

On October 27 at OVW, Randy Orton and Mark Henry defeated the then tag team champions in a non-title match. The champions initially won the match, but Nidia informed the referee that they had cheated, causing the referee to restart the match and the match was eventually reversed. On the January 19, 2002 episode of OVW, John Cena defeated Randy Orton in his last bout before retiring to the main roster. On February 20, 2002 on OVW TV, John Cena won the Ohio Valley Wresling Championship by defeating Leviathan (Batista)! On February 20, 2002, during the OVW weekly show, Prototype faced his first opportunity to win the all-important developmental belt. In the bout of the evening, he defeated Leviathan (Batista), making him the new OVW Heavyweight Champion! He made his first championship defense on March 20, where he lost to David Flair, but by disqualification, so the title did not change hands. On April 3, 2002 at OVW, Prototype defeated Flash to defend the OVW Championship. His next defense came only a month later, on May 11, where he defeated Leviathan once again. He lost the title four days later, where he lost to Nova at the OVW gala. He received his rematch on May 31, but was unable to defeat his opponent.  September 22, 2002 was John Cena's last match under the ring name 'The Prototype' in Ohio Valley Wrestling, where he lost to Kenny Bolin in a 'loser leaves OVW' match.

John Cena made his official main roster debut on June 27, 2002 at SmackDown, where he answered an open challenge from Kurt Angle. He didn't win the fight, but he ushered in the Ruthless Agressin era, leaving a really good impression. Later that same night, Cena received compliments from the Unisputed Champion himself - Undertaker. He had his first rivalry with Chris Jericho himself, whom he defeated at his first PPV - Vengeance. In October 2002, Cena teamed up with Billy Kidman to win a tag team tournament for the tag team belts. They fell in the first round as they lost to Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. Two weeks later, Cena underwent his first heel turn in WWE, attacking his tag teammate Billy Kidman.

On October 30 at a special Halloween SmackDown!, John Cena dressed up as Vanilla Ice, where he performed his first rap in the backstage area. And that launched his rapper gimmick, which was Doctor of Thugonomics! Virtually every week we could hear his rap promo, during which he was backed by Bull Buchanan, who he also began working with.

At the Royal Rumble in January, John Cena competed in a Royal Rumble Match, but obviously did not win it. In February, he began his rivalry with Brock Lesnar. On February 13, 2003, he faced him on SmackDown, but lost the match. After the match itself, Cena initiated an F5 to the steel corner, which caused Lesnar to damage his knee. This put their rivalry on hold for a bit, but Cena performed his rap proma despite the injury. At WrestleMania 19, he appeared on the pre-show, where he performed another of his raps. After WM, Cena successfully made his way through the tournament to become a contender for the WWE belt, defeating Undertaker and Chris Benoit, among others. At Backlash, he once again lost to Brock Lesnar, but this time the aforementioned WWE belt was on the line. Cena then got into a brief rivalry with Undertaker which ended at Vengeance. Taker won the match. His next opponent was none other than Kurt Angle. After an interesting match, it came to an end at No Mercy where Cena lost to the Golden Olympian by submission. After a rather 'dead' period, Cena took a face turn after refusing to play for Brock Lesnar's team, instead playing for Kurt Angle's team. The match took place at Survivor Series of course, where Kurt's team proved to be better.

In late January 2004, John Cena competed in a Royal Rumble Match for the second time, and the two faced each other at WrestleMania 20, where Cena defeated the Giant to win his first WWE Title! He held the United States belt for almost 4 months until the then SmackDown General Manager Kurt Angle stripped him of it on July 8 after he 'accidentally' flew into it. He regained the title on October 3 at No Mercy, where he eventually managed to defeat Booker T in a Best of 5 Series Match. Just two days later, he lost the title to the debuting Carlito. In between, we got a storyline where John Cena was attacked by Carlito's bodyguard Jesús while he was in a bar in Boston. This was to excuse the absence of Cena, who went to shoot scenes for the movie 'The Marine', where he played the lead role. He returned to SmackDown on November 16, where he was given a rematch bout for the United States belt immediately upon his return. The then champion, Carlito, didn't stand much of a chance against Cena, making him a 3-time United States Champion! Cena decided to mark the occasion with a new look for the title, making it a spinner.

He performed quite well as he made it to the final six, eventually being eliminated by Big Showa. At No Way Out, John Cena competed in a triple threat match for the WWE Title, but once again had to take on Kurt Angle, who for the second time forced him to submit after the Ankle Lock. The bout also featured Big Show, with him continuing his rivalry with the United States belt in the background.

In January 2005, John Cena once again participated in the Royal Rumble Match, where this time he and Batista were in the final two. It initially happened that Cena and Batista eliminated each other at the same time, but after Vince McMahon intervened, the match resumed with Batista being the smarter of the two. At No Way Out, Cena faced Kurt Angle for the WWE belt at WrestleMania 21, and this time it was Cena who emerged victorious from the battle. After this gala, he started a long program with JBL, who was the WWE champion at the time. Cena lost the United States belt even before WrestleMania, in a battle against Orlando Jordan, who defeated him thanks to JBL's intervention. At WrestleMania 21, John Cena defeated JBL, allowing him to win the WWE belt for the first time in his career! Two days later on SmackDown, John Cena introduced us to the new look WWE belt, the well-known spinner. His feud with JBL continued, whom he managed to defeat at Judgment Day in a very brutal 'I Quit Match' match.

On June 6, 2005, the draft took place, making John Cena officially move to RAW. And just as he began with a segment with Chris Jericho, he began his first feud with him on the red weekly. The men ended their rivalry at SummerSlam, where the WWE Champion emerged victorious. On August 22 on RAW, Cena once again defeated Jericho, but this time in a bout where the loser is released from WWE. Cena then began his rivalry once again with Kurt Angle, who this time aspired to win the WWE Championship belt. He failed to do so at Unforgiven and at Survivor Series in November. Although he won at Unforgiven, it was by disqualification, so the belt did not change hands.

On January 2, 2006, a First Blood Match took place on RAW, where John Cena defeated Kurt Angle via STF. At New Year's Revolution, John Cena defended the WWE belt in an Elimination Chamber Match in which he defeated Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Chris Masters, Carlito, and Kane. Moments later, Edge appeared and used his previously won Money in the Bank briefcase. The Rated R Superstar emerged victorious after executing two spears! Cena regained the title three weeks later, at the Royal Rumble he defeated Edge, thus winning the WWE belt for the second time in his career! After regaining the championship, John Cena began his rivalry with Triple H, whom he defeated at WrestleMania 22. Here it is noteworthy to listen to the audience, who were not enthusiastic about John. Rob Van Dam as the winner of the Money in the Bank briefed Cena that he was realizing his gain in a clean fight, and the duel would take place at the One Night Stand gala, under the ECW brand. And here we had a rivalry between WWE stars and ECW stars at the same time. At the aforementioned One Night Stand gala, RVD defeated John Cena after a masked Edge slapped a spear on his corner table. This is also where Cena received a lot of heat, with chants such as ''Fuck You Cena'', ''Same Old Shit'' and ''You Can't Wrestle'' being classics of the match.

In July, Edge took the belt from Rob Van Dam in a Triple Threat Match that also featured John Cena. It continued with another fierce rivalry between John Cena and Edge. In between, the champion introduced his own look for the belt. Their fierce rivalry led to a bout at Unforgiven, where the two faced off in Toronto, Edge's hometown, in a TLC Match. The bout was won by Cena, who targeted Edge with a massive FU from a ladder onto two tables! After that, he took the belts off, making him win the WWE belt for the third time in his career!

After he ended his feud with Edge, Cena was embroiled in a brief rivalry with champions from other brands. The rivalry was to determine the champion of champions. Therefore, the Cyber Sunday gala featured a bout between John Cena and Booker T (WHC Champion) and Bobby Lashley (ECW Champion). The fans in the audience were able to decide which belt would be on the line, and they voted for the heavyweight belt. Either way, Booker T managed to win the bout, thus not losing the title. After the fight, Kevin Federline attacked Cena with the WWE belt. Towards the end of the year, we received John Cena's rivalry with Umaga. On January 1, 2007 on RAW, Cena lost to Kevin Federline after significant help from Umaga. At New Year's Revolution, John Cena defeated Umaga for the WWE Championship belt. The rematch, and the end of the feud, came at the Royal Rumble, where Cena defeated his rival for the second time, but this time in a Last Man Standing Match.

The night after the Royal Rumble, John Cena teamed up with Shawn Michaels to face Rated-RKO (Edge and Randy Orton) for the tag team championship. They won the bout, making them the new champions! The two generally started a rivalry with each other, but for the duration of No Way Out, they tried to work together, as they had to face Batista and Undertaker, whom they defeated. After the bout, Cena received Sweet Chin Music from HBK. At WrestleMania 22, John Cena defeated Shawn Michaels for the WWE Championship belt. A night later on RAW, Cena and Michaels lost the tag team belts in a tag team Battle Royal after Shawn kicked out his tag team partner. After Shawn Michaels, it was the turn of another giant, and we're talking about Khalim. This one dominated Cena throughout the feud, but only got one victory. He first lost to Cena at Judgment Day, then managed to defeat Cena at the Satruday Night Main Event, where the WWE belt was not on the line, and finally lost at One Night Stand. As an interesting note, Cena was the first competitor to force Khali to submit, and it happened at Judgment Day. John Cena's next opponent is well known to all...Randy Orton. Overall, Orton managed to be named a title contender, allowing him to face John Cena at SummerSlam in August. Despite the fact that he had brandished his opponent with three RKOs, he still lost the match, and Cena was still able to enjoy the championship. Over the following weeks, the two attacked each other, but it was Orton who stepped on Cena's toes when he attacked his father. This led to Cena's disqualification at Unforgiven, as he furiously attacked his opponent despite being told to stop by the referee.

On October 1, 2007 on RAW, John Cena suffered an injury in his bout against Mr. Kennedy while performing a hiptoss. He generally tore his chest tendon, but still finished what he was supposed to finish. He was still attacked by Orton, who ended up giving him an RKO on the commentary table! This situation occurred a week before No Mercy, where the two were to face each other in another match. A night later, Vince McMahon officially announced that Cena had been stripped of the WWE belt due to injury. This ended his title-run, which lasted 380 days and was his longest reign in almost 20 years. His return had been talked about in the context of 6-8 months.

However, Cenation's leader made his comeback sooner than expected, as he returned at January's Royal Rumble Match, where he came out with the final number, 30. He eventually won the match, eliminating Triple H last. This victory ensured that he would fight for one of the championship belts at WrestleMania 24. A night later on RAW, he chose the WWE belt held by Randy Orton at the time. However, he announced that he would use his title shot at the No Way Out! He won the match, but by disqualification, as Randy Orton specifically attacked the referee. Cena then repaid Orton with an attack. Triple H joined their continued rivalry, resulting in a Triple Threat Match at WrestleMania 24, which saw Orton once again retain the WWE Championship belt. The title didn't change hands until Backlash, where Hunter got the better of John Cena, Randy Orton and JBL in a Fatal 4-Way Elimination Match, which Cena managed to eliminate himself. This turn of events then began their rivalry, which continued for the next three PPVs. Cena defeated JBL on Judgment Day and in a First Blood Match at One Night Stand before losing to him in a New York Parking Lot Brawl Match at Great American Bash.

On August 4, 2008 on RAW, John Cena and Batista unexpectedly won the tag team championship belts after defeating Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes! They lost the tag team belts just a week later as a result of an argument that broke out between the two. The titles were returned to their former owners. Mike Adamle (the GM of RAW at the time) decided to take advantage of his feud and set up a match at SummerSlam! The duel was won by Batista, who defeated Cena after two massive powerbombs. Cena was next scheduled to compete in a Scramble Match for the Heavyweight Belt at Unforgiven, but was replaced by Rey Mysterio. All due to a neck injury that the Cenation leader sustained while fighting at SummerSlam.

In early November, it was announced that John Cena was returning to Survivor Series, where he would face Chris Jericho for the heavyweight belt. And so, in the bout of the evening, he defeated Y2J, thus becoming the Heavyweight Champion for the first time in his career! There was still an Armaggedon match in December, which featured a rematch, but Jericho was unable to take the title away from Cena. As the year came to a close, John Cena started another feud with JBL.

In January 2009, John Cena defeated JBL at the Royal Rumble for the heavyweight belt. His next championship defense came at No Way Out in an Elimination Chamber Match. Just before the match began, Kofi Kingston was attacked by Edge, who ended up taking his place in the Elimination Chamber. In this turn of events, Edge won the match, taking out John Cena and Rey Mysterio, among others! What's interesting and noteworthy is that Edge lost the WWE belt that same night. Originally, at WrestleMania 25, Edge was supposed to fight Big Show for the Heavyweight belt, but thanks to Cena's ingenuity, it was added to the match. And so at WrestleMania 25, a Triple Threat Match took place in which John Cena proved to be better than his rivals, thus becoming a two-time Heavyweight Champion! Big Show was subsequently separated from title contention, and Cena and Edge met in their final bout. The Last Man Standing Match took place at Backlash, during which...Big Show intervened. The giant targeted Cena with a Chokeslam on one of the spotlights, which thus involved the defeat of the Cenation leader, who was counted out to ten! Cena's attention then had to be focused on Big Showa, whom he faced at two PPV galas. He first defeated him at Judgment Day and then in a Submission Match at Extreme Rules. Cena then focused on a brief rivalry with The Miz, who picked on him more or less after the Backlash gala. Cena defeated him in a quick match at The Bash.

Cena won the title shot for the WWE Championship belt in July, which allowed him to face Triple H and Randy Orton at Night of Champions. He didn't generally win the match, but he still had a chance to win the title as he continued his rivalry with Orton, whom he faced at the hottest show of the summer, SummerSlam. He could have won the match several times, but a number of 'random' events prevented him from doing so. At Breaking Point, John Cena defeated Randy Orton in an 'I Quit' Match, making him the WWE Champion for the fourth time in his career! He didn't enjoy the title for long, however, as he lost it just two weeks later in a Hell in a Cell Match against Orton. The men decided to end their rivalry with one last fight, which was to take place at Bragging Rights. The bout was to be an Iron Man Match and a condition that Cena's defeat would mean his departure from RAW. On October 25, 2009 at Bragging Rights, John Cena defeated Randy Orton in an Iron Man Match (by a score of 6:5), which also meant that he became the WWE Champion for the fifth time in his career!

John Cena was then mixed into a bout against members of Degeneration X. A Triple Threat Match was set for Survivor Series, where Cena got the better of Triple H and Shawn Michaels. A Battle Royal was held on RAW, the winner of which would claim the title shot for the WWE belt at the TLC gala, the duel was won by the recently debuting Sheamus. Prior to the aforementioned PPV gala, it was also determined that it would be a Tables Match. The fight at December's TLC was unexpectedly won by the Irishman, who won the WWE belt for the first time in his career! Cena won a mini-tournament at the RAW 'Slammy Awards' to be named Star of the Year, where he managed to defeat CM Punk and Randy Orton. After RAW went off the air, he announced that he would do anything to win back the WWE belt.

During the Royal Rumble Match in January, John Cena made it to the final two, but was eliminated last by Edge. He then managed to qualify for the Elimination Chamber Match at the first gala with the same name as the pinfall. At Elimination Chamber, he managed to submit the last Triple H, allowing him to become a 6-time WWE Champion! He wasn't champion for long, as Vince McMahon showed up and set Cena up with another match, against Batista. As you can guess, John Cena didn't stand a chance against him, which resulted in him losing the WWE belt just five minutes after winning it.

This turn of events meant that at WrestleMania 26, we got a match between John Cena and Batista for the WWE Championship belt. Before that could happen, Cena had to earn that match first, where on RAW he had to defeat Batista first. He won, but by disqualification, all because Batista specifically targeted him with a low blow. At WrestleMania 26, John Cena submitted Batista after going to STF, thus regaining the WWE belt, which he won for the seventh time in his career! Their rivalry didn't end, of course. At Extreme Rules, John Cena defeated Batista for a second time, this time in a Last Man Standing Match, where in order to win against him, he had to tape his legs around a steel corner so the referee could count him out. It all ended at Over the Limit, where we got the all-too-familiar 'I Quit' Match. Batista said those two words the moment Cena had him on his shoulders, while at the same time being on the roof of a car on the ramp. Of course, after the fight itself, he slapped a massive Attitude Adjustment on him on the ramp! After the whole situation, Cena was still attacked from behind by Sheamus.

On June 7, 2010 on RAW, John Cena dueled with CM Punk, which saw the first season of NXT invade. Everyone got hurt, John Cena, the commentators, and the ring was also affected and destroyed. This promised to be a really interesting story. The Fatal 4-Way featured a four-way match where John Cena lost the WWE belt to Sheamus, all because of the Nexus Group. Continuing the feud with Nexus, he still got his chance to regain the title at the Money in the Bank gala. All he had to do was defeat Sheamus in a Steel Cage Match. He failed to do so, as members of the Nexus group did everything they could to prevent Cena from leaving the cage first, and they succeeded. After the bout, Cena took his frustration out on Michael Tarver. Cena couldn't tolerate that kind of behavior, so he formed his team for SummerSlam, where they would get rid of Nexus. And so his team included Edge, Chris Jericho, John Morrison, R-Truth, Great Khali and..Bret Hart. Due to their different characters, there were many arguments. Y2J wanted to be the captain of the team, so a battle ensued where the captain's belt was on the line, defeat meant leaving the team. Cena eventually defeated Jericho, so Jericho left the WWE team. Then Edge turned away from the team, and finally Khali was injured after a Nexus attack, causing Cena to have to look for a replacement. On the last RAW before SummerSlam, the WWE team finally reconciled, then defeated their rivals in a massive brawl. The tag team bout at SummerSlam was an elimination bout. Khali's spot was replaced by former Nexus member...Daniel Bryan. In the final bout, John Cena was left with three Nexus competitors, who he ended up defeating anyway.

Wade Barrett then wanted John Cena to join his group, but John Cena obviously had no intention of doing so. Therefore, Barrett challenged him to a fight. At Hell in a Cell, they were to face each other one-on-one, and Cena's defeat meant that Cena would join the Nexus. At Hell in a Cell, Wade Barrett defeated John Cena after intervention from Husky Harris (Bray Wyatt) and Michael McGillicutty (Curtis Axel), which meant he would have to join the Nexus! A night later on RAW, we met the new general manager of the red weekender, which was Laptop. In one of his first emails, Cena was told that he had to follow Wade Barrett's orders, otherwise he would be fired from WWE. And so Barrett did many things to simply humiliate him. At Bragging Rights, John Cena teamed with David Otunga to defeat Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre, making them the new tag team champions! Later that night, Barrett told Cena to do everything he could to win his match with Randy Orton for the WWE belt. And so he did, Barrett won, but by disqualification, all because Cena specifically attacked him. After the match, Cena received an RKO from Orton. On the first RAW after the PPV, Barrett ordered a bout between John Cena and David Otunga and Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel for the previously won tag team belts. The Nexus leader had Otunga subbed in to be counted out, and so he did.

Another bout between Barrett and Orton for the WWE belt was announced at Survivor Series, but this time John Cena was to be the special referee. A stipulation was also added to the bout, in which an Orton victory meant Cena's release from the WWE, and a Barrett win meant freedom from the Nexus Group. The fight was ultimately won by Orton, so Cena's future was clear. The Cenation leader bid farewell to the crowd the night after, then left. He was gone for a short time, as he reappeared later that night, attacking Barrett in his rematch for the WWE belt against Orton! It was on this night that The Miz was cashing in, winning the WWE belt for the first time in his career. For the following weeks, Cena would appear on RAW and effectively attack all members of the Nexus in a variety of ways. All in an effort to get Barrett to yield and bring him back. Under pressure from the competitors, Barrett brought Cena back, and it was all set to end at December's TLC, where the two would face off in a Chairs Match. The bout was won by the former WWE Champion, who performed an Attitude Adjustment on Barrett on a stack of chairs! After the fight, he still walked up the ramp with him, where chairs were dropped on him from above.

On December 27 on RAW, Nexus announced that they would have a new leader. Later that same night, Cena was attacked by them. After one armbar was left in the ring and Nexus went to the back, CM Punk arrived in the ring with a chair. And it was he who proved to be the new leader of the group!

In January 2011, the final chapter with the Nexus group was upon us. First CM Punk informed Barrett that if he lost his bout in the Steel Cage Match for the WWE belt, he would be kicked out of the Nexus. And he lost, precisely because of CM Punk. On January 17 on RAW, Cena had a duel with CM Punk, which ended with an attack by the new member of the New Nexus, Wasison Ryan. The last RAW before the Royal Rumble featured a bout between CM Punk (with Nexus at his side) and Wade Barrett (with The Corre at his side), with John Cena as the special referee. The loser of this match lost the most, as defeat meant that the group would not participate in the Royal Rumble Match. Cena made it so that they were both disqualified, which would mean that both teams would not compete in the main event of the Royal Rumble, but the decision was changed by the anonymous general manager of RAW, who announced that both groups would compete in the match. During the Royal Rumble Match, Cena eliminated practically all members of the Nexus, but the fight was not won. All because of The Miz, who despite not participating in the match, showed up and eliminated Cena from the ring.

The Elimination Chamber featured an Elimination Chamber Match for the title of contender to the WWE Championship belt, where John Cena proved to be better than five other rivals. Cena may have started a feud with The Miz for good, but as of February 21, the long-awaited rivalry with The Rock began on RAW. That same night, Cena and The Miz teamed up to challenge for the tag team belts, defeating Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel to become the new tag team champions! After the bout, we got their second bout, which was restarted by the anonymous general manager. They lost the duel after Miz's attack on Cena. This also meant the loss of the tag team belts. For the next few weeks, we saw verbal skirmishes between Cena and Rock, where Miz was also in between. On the last RAW before WrestleMania 27, there was a confrontation between John Cena, The Rock, Miz and Alex Riley. At one point, Cena left the ring and Miz and Riley attacked The Rock. After Johnson dealt with them, Cena came back into the ring and brandished an Attitude Adjustment on him! At WrestleMania 27, there was a double countout between John Cena and The Miz for the WWE Championship belt. After the bout, the show's host, The Rock, showed up and restarted the bout, which this time would be without a disqualification. Cena received a Rock Bottom from The Rock, allowing Miz to win the match. The WWE Champion also flopped after the bout. On April 1 on RAW, John Cena stood together with The Rock in the same ring. Both men agreed that their conflict must end, they agreed that they would face each other at WrestleMania 28! Such an announcement was followed by The Corre, who took a beating from their rivals. Cena continued to try for the WWE belt, and got his chance at Extreme Rules, where he defeated The Miz and John Morrison in a Triple Threat Steel Cage Match, making him the WWE Champion for the eighth time in his career! Cena continued his rivalry with The Miz, where their rivalry culminated at Over the Limit. Cena and Miz faced each other in an 'I Quit' Match, and even though Miz was helped by Alex Riley, he still couldn't get Cena to say the words 'I Quit'.

John Cena's next opponent was R-Truth, who got his chance for the WWE Championship belt at the Capitol Punishment gala. Cena won this match after one of the kids doused R-Truth with a drink, after which he received an Attitude Adjustment from the WWE Champion.

On June 27 on RAW, Cena faced R-Truth once again. This time, the bout took place with tables. At one point, CM Punk appeared and distracted John Cena. This in turn was taken advantage of by R-Truth, who smashed Cena with a table, which meant the end of the duel. After the fight itself, we heard the famous pipe bomb performed by Punk. Cena wanted to fight Punk at Money in the Bank, but Vince McMahon wouldn't allow it. He relented at one point, but informed Cena that if he lost to him, he would be fired from WWE! At Money in the Bank, CM Punk defeated John Cena, making him the new WWE Champion. A night later on RAW, Cena was set to be fired by Vince McMahon, but was prevented from doing so by Triple H, who replaced him in his position. Later that same night, Cena received a title shot for the WWE belt. After Rey Mysterio defeated The Miz in the finals of the tournament for the vacant WWE belt, he had to defend the title an hour later. John Cena defeated Rey Mysterio in the RAW Fight of the Night, which also meant that he became the WWE Champion for the ninth time in his career! After the fight, CM Punk showed up with his second WWE belt.

The above situation led to a bout for the undisputed WWE Champion between John Cena and CM Punk being announced for SummerSlam, with Triple H himself being the special referee. The fight was again won by CM Punk, and he claimed the WWE Championship for the second time in his career. Punk was attacked by Kevin Nash after the fight, which was also used by Alberto Del Rio, who effectively used the Money in the Bank briefcase on him! Cena then began a feud with the Mexican, who he would face at Night of Champions, while Punk focused on Hunter, as he replaced Kevin Nash, who Brooks would face. At Night of Champions in September, John Cena defeated Alberto Del Rio to become the WWE Champion for the 10th time in his career! At Hell in a Cell, we got a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship belt, where John Cena, Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk met in the cage. Del Rio emerged victorious from this match, becoming a two-time WWE Champion. After the bout, two masked competitors entered the ring, which turned out to be The Miz and R-Truth. They brutally attacked the Hell in a Cell Match participants, referees, and even the cameramen. They were dealt with by Triple H, who threw them out of the arena with the help of other competitors. A night later on RAW, Cena and Punk defeated Miz and R-Truth in a tag team bout, but more important was what happened after the bout. Hunter came out to the ramp and fired Miz and R-Truth! Cena received his rematch for the WWE belt at Vengeance, where he faced Del Rio in a Last Man Standing Match. The two had to fight in a wrecked ring, having previously been wrecked after Big Showa's bout with Mark Henry. Cena lost the match after Miz and R-Truth intervened.

On October 25 on RAW, John Laurinaitis announced that The Miz and R-Truth would face John Cena and his tag team partner at Survivor Series. Cena was given the opportunity to choose his teammate and he chose...The Rock! A week later, The Rock accepted the Cenation leader's offer, and Cena was the victor in his confrontation against The Miz, finally targeting R-Truth with an Attitude Adjustment. On the final RAW before Survivor Series, the first and final confrontation between John Cena, The Rock, The Miz and R-Truth took place, with the latter two getting beaten down. At Survivor Series, John Cena and The Rock defeated R-Truth and The Miz without much trouble. After the bout, Rock slapped his tag team partner Rock Bottom.

After several uninteresting episodes of RAW, a bout between John Cena and Mark Henry took place on December 12. The bout saw the return of the masked Kane, who eventually attacked the Cenation leader. This, of course, led to their rivalry, with hatred being the main theme. Kane simply wanted Cena to move to the side of hate so he could finally start being aggressive. Zack Ryder and Eve Torres were mixed into the storyline, and that was Cena's weak point. At January's Royal Rumble, John Cena faced Kane for the first time, but the bout ended with no result A rematch occurred at the following PPV, where Cena this time defeated his opponent in an Ambulance Match.

Cena was then able to focus on his rivalry with The Rock. The official program of these men began on February 20 on RAW, but John Cena appeared in the ring and stated that he did not respect The Rock. It wasn't until a week later that we saw their first verbal confrontation, where they both announced that they would beat each other. On March 12 on RAW, John Cena did a rap promo insulting his rival and The Rock did a guitar performance where he played for Vickie Guerrero in addition to a song about Cena. Two weeks later we saw their final confrontation, as it was the last RAW before WrestleMania 28, with Rock stating that he needed to beat John Cena to become WWE's biggest star. Cena, however, stated that the headlines would say one thing - John Cena kicking The Rock's ass at WrestleMania.

On April 1, WrestleMania 28 took place in Miami, where The Rock proved to be better than John Cena in their 'Once in a lifetime Match'!

The night after WrestleMania 28, John Cena came out to the ring where he had some words to say. He called out The Rock at one point, but a returning Brock Lesnar appeared instead. There was a visible smile on John Cena's face as he extended his hand to Lesnar. Lesnar reciprocated the gesture, after which he lifted Cena onto his shoulders and gave him an F5! A week later, they had their second confrontation, with Cena coming out to Lesnar to slap him in the face. A huge brawl ensued, with a bit of blood being spilled. The whole situation had to be contained by a large group of competitors. This, of course, led to their bout at Extreme Rules, and so a contract signing for the bout took place before the last RAW before this PPV. At Extreme Rules, John Cena despite receiving a thrashing defeated Brock Lesnar after an Attitude Adjustment to the steel steps in an Extreme Rules Match! John Cena's next opponent was...John Laurinaitis, who announced himself as his opponent at Over the Limit. At the PPV, Cena was doing whatever he wanted with Big Johnny when he ran to the back. However, he was turned back by Big Show, who was released by him earlier. The general style of the bout was that whoever intervenes in the fight will be fired, so the appearance of the Giant meant one thing, a KO Punch for John Cena, making it Laurinaitis who won the bout! The highlight of this show was the No Way Out gala, where Cena faced Big Show in a Steel Cage Match. The condition was clear, the defeat of Showa meant the release of Laurinaitis. The duel was won by the Cenation leader, and after the match itself, Laurinaitis was hoisted onto Cena's back, from where he was heard saying to Vince McMahon 'You're Fired!", after which he received an Attitude Adjustment on the commentary table!

John Cena then focused on the show for the Money in the Bank briefcase, which was also to feature Kane, Big Show, The Miz and Chris Jericho. The bout was announced on June 25 on RAW, where the idea was simply that the Ladder Match would feature the former champions themselves. That same night, Cena faced Jericho, and the result of the bout was that the Cenation leader won it by disqualification, all because of Big Showa's intervention. At Money in the Bank, John Cena, after knocking Big Showa down with a suitcase from the top of a ladder, took it down, allowing him to win the match. A night later on RAW, WWE Champion CM Punk was destroyed by Big Showa, which John Cena decided to answer with his Money in the Bank briefcase. He didn't use the briefcase, however, as he informed Punk that he would use it in a fair way, in a normal fight, on the 1000th episode of RAW. So on July 23 we got their match, which Cena won, but by disqualification. All thanks to Big Showa, who intervened twice in this match. After the fight itself appeared The Rock, who took care of the giant. A moment later, however, he was attacked by CM Punk, who thus underwent a heel turn.

Generally, such an outline of things created a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship belt at SummerSlam, where Punk would defend the title against John Cena and Big Sh. On July 30, such a match was announced on RAW after Punk attacked his rivals for the title. On the last RAW before the gala PPV, John Cena teamed with CM Punk to defeat Daniel Bryan and Big Showa. At SummerSlam, John Cena and CM Punk jointly submitted Big Showa after forcing a double submission, so RAW GM AJ Lee restarted the match. Cena brandished a Huge Attitude Adjustment, after which he was thrown out of the ring, and Punk executed the winning pinfall.

Cena didn't let up in his attempt to win the WWE belt, but everything was on CM Punk's side to choose his next opponent. At one point, of course, he chose him, and their feud grew more interesting by the week. On September 3 on RAW, Cena faced Alberto Del Rio in a Falls Count Anywhere Match. The bout moved to the back at one point, where Cena was surprisingly attacked by Punk, who ended up giving him a GTS. Del Rio won the bout, and we learned that the WWE Champion's manager is...Paul Heyman. On the last RAW before Night of Champions, we got a segment featuring Cena, Punk and Bret Hart. It ended with Punk taking a beating from the WWE Hall of Famer. At Night of Champions, John Cena's bout with CM Punk ended in a double pinfall, leaving the WWE Championship in the same hands. After the bout itself, Cena was still ringed with the championship belt.

Cena was next scheduled to compete for the WWE Championship at Hell in a Cell, but due to injury, he was replaced by Ryback, whom he himself eventually named as Punk's challenger. However, Cena appeared on the Hell in a Cell pre-show, where he gave an interview in the middle of the ring. The topic came down to AJ Lee, with whom Cena was said to be having an affair. This was of course initiated by Vickie Guerrero and Dolph Ziggler, with whom a brawl ensued. Cena got his last chance to win the WWE belt at November's Survivor Series, where CM Punk was yet to defend the title against Ryback. In between, we still had the thread of the AJ Lee affair, where more evidence was presented by Vickie Guerrero. On November 5 on RAW, John Cena and Ryback defeated CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler. At Survivor Series, CM Punk defeated John Cena and Ryback in a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship belt thanks to the intervention of The Shield group.

Cena separated himself from the WWE belt after that to focus on his rivalry with Dolph Ziggler. This set up their bout at the December TLC event, where the two would face each other in a Ladder Match for the Money in the Bank briefcase, which was held by Dolph Ziggler. On November 30 on SmackDown, John Cena faced Alberto Del Rio, whom he defeated. After the bout, he was attacked from behind with the Money in the Bank briefcase by Dolph Ziggler. On the first RAW in December, a tag team bout took place in which John Cena and Sheamus defeated Dolph Ziggler and Big Showa. That same night, the aforementioned tag team bout style was established. At TLC, John Cena lost to Dolph Ziggler for the Money in the Bank briefcase in a Ladder Match after AJ Lee unexpectedly knocked Cena off the ladder. The next RAW was from the Slammy Awards, where John Cena and Vickie Guerrero faced Dolph Ziggler and AJ Lee. The bout saw an intervention from Big E Langston, who scored his main roster debut. He, of course, attacked John Cena, to whom he delivered a Big Ending. On the last RAW of 2012, we learned that Cena announced his participation in the Royal Rumble Match. Later that night, he made a 'toast' with Ziggler and AJ Lee, on whom something brown fell :).

January 14, 2013 was RAW, where the 20th anniversary of the weekly show was celebrated. There we got the finale of his rivalry with Dolph Ziggler, whom he eventually defeated in a Steel Cage Match.

On January 27, he participated in the Royal Rumble Match, where he entered with number 19 and won the match for the second time in his career! A night later, Cena announced that he would fight at WrestleMania 29 for the WWE Championship belt, but he would not meet his opponent until the Elimination Chamber, as there was a rematch between The Rock and CM Punk. Cena, meanwhile, focused on a brief rivalry with The Shield, with Ryback and Sheamus at his side. At Elimination Chamber, The Shield group proved to be better than the guys. That same night, The Rock defeated CM Punk for the WWE belt for the second time, so a rematch from a year ago was set to take place at WrestleMania 29. However, the fate of this match was not so certain, The Rock presented a new look for the WWE belt a night later, and Cena gave CM Punk a shot at becoming a title contender. From there, they faced each other on February 25 on RAW, where Cena finally got the better of his challenger, whom he defeated after a hurricanrana and Attitude Adjustment.

Cena and Rock were finally able to focus on their rivalry, which looked similar to the one last year where the two confronted each other verbally. On the last RAW before WrestleMania, there was a special Q&A after which Cena wanted to administer the Attitude Adjustment to Rock, but ended up receiving the Rock Bottom. At WrestleMania 29, John Cena defeated The Rock by Attitude Adjustment, thus winning the WWE belt for the 11th time in his career!

The night after WrestleMania 29, John Cena began his rivalry with Ryback, who that same night went through a heel turn after attacking the WWE Champion. At Extreme Rules, they faced off in a Last Man Standing Match that ended in a no-contest, due to Ryback ramming Cena into the metal structure of the titantron. The feud continued, of course, and the culmination of their rivalry was to be a Three Stage of Hell Match, where you had to get two winning pinfalls in two different bouts to win. The two were to face each other in a Lumberjack Match, a Tables Match, and an Ambulance Match. On June 3 on RAW, Cena lost to Curtis Axel via countout, all due to Ryback deciding to smash a table with it. At Payback, John Cena defeated Ryback by a score of 2 to 1 (winning the Tables Match and the Ambulance Match), keeping the WWE Championship belt intact.

Cena's next challenger was Mark Henry, who plotted the end of his career, only to attack him. Despite his great attempts, Cena defeated him anyway at Money in the Bank. Cena was then given the chance to choose his opponent for SummerSlam, and by a vote of the crowd, he chose Daniel Bryan. Their rivalry mostly consisted of verbal skirmishes, with Bryan calling Cena a parody of a wrestler. At SummerSlam, Daniel Bryan defeated John Cena after performing a running knee, making him the new WWE Champion! On August 19, 2013 on RAW, John Cena announced that he had to go on a break, all due to triceps surgery. There was talk of a 4-6 month break from performing in the ring.

On October 7 on RAW, Vickie Guerrero announced that Hell in a Cell would feature a bout between Alberato Del Rio and the returning John Cena for the Heavyweight Belt. On November 27 at Hell in a Cell, John Cena defeated Alberto Del Rio, which earned him the heavyweight belt for the third time in his career! A night later on RAW, he was attacked by Money in the Bank briefcase winner Damien Sandow, who decided to take advantage. Despite having a huge early advantage, Sandow still lost the match and lost the briefcase. Cena continued his rivalry with Del Rio, whom he even faced in an Arm Wrestling Match on SmackDown. At Survivor Series, a rematch took place in which Cena defeated the Mexican for the second time. That same night, Cena came to the ring after fighting Randy Orton, who successfully defended the WWE belt. The two simply elevated their world titles to the top. On November 25 on RAW, they had a verbal confrontation in which Cena felt that there must be only 'one champion' in WWE. Triple H decided to resolve the situation, so he set a match for the WWE and Heavyweight Championships at the TLC Gala, where Cena and Orton had to face each other in a TLC Match. On the last RAW before the PPV gala, their final confrontation took place, which included the former champions of those titles. Naturally, a brawl ensued in which Orton accidentally knocked out Stephanie McMahon. An enraged Triple H decided to administer the Pedigree to him. On December 14 at TLC, Randy Orton got the better of John Cena in a TLC Match, making him the first ever WWE World Heavyweight Champion!

Their feud didn't end, of course, but for several December galas nothing at all happened to advance their rivalry. On January 6, a segment featuring Cena, Orton and Ric Flair took place on RAW. A week later, Cena faced Damien Sandow on RAW, where during the bout Randy Orton appeared to attack Cena's father in the stands! On the last RAW before the Royal Rumble, their brawl occurred, from which Orton escaped by driving off in some kind of car. At the Royal Rumble, Randy Orton again defeated John Cena for the WWE WHC belt, this time thanks to intervention from The Wyatt Family.

His last chance to win the WWE WHC belt came at the Elimination Chamber match, where Orton defended the title against Daniel Bryan, Sheamus, Cesaro and Christian. Cena got into the match after teaming with Sheamus and Daniel Bryan to defeat The Shield via disqualification. Cena was eventually eliminated at the Elimination Chamber by Randy Orton, and it was The Wyatt Family who did their thing again by attacking the Cenation leader. The bout was ultimately won by Randy Orton.

This meant that Cena focused on his rivalry with Bray Wyatt, whom he challenged to a match at WrestleMania 30. At Wyatt's side were Erick Rowan and Luke Harper, who effectively made John Cena's life miserable. On March 24 on RAW, John Cena faced Luke Harper. After performing the Attitude Adjustment on him, the lights went out and when they came back on, Bray Wyatt appeared with Erick Rowan. By this time, Cena was barely conscious, tied up with the ropes. Wyatt put a sheep mask over his head. On the last RAW before WrestleMania, Cena was finally able to get his revenge on Wyatt, hence why he showed up after his fight, dressed as a farmer's outfit with a sheep mask. Once he took it off, he went on the attack. Harper was thrown out of the ring, and Rowan received the Attitude Adjustment. The same awaited Bray Wyatt, but he escaped the ring. At WrestleMania 30, John Cena defeated Bray Wyatt in a singles match. Their feud was not over, Wyatt continued to play psychological games on Cena, and their second bout was to take place at Extreme Rules. There they faced off in a Steel Cage Match, which Wyatt won, all due to a child who scared Cena when he tried to leave the cage through the door. They had their third and final bout at Payback, where Cena proved to be better in a Last Man Standing Match.

John began a feud with The Authority, specifically Stephanie McMahon, on June 2 on RAW. As punishment, he received a clash with Kane, which he managed to win by disqualification. The following week, Cena along with Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns defeated The Wyatt Family. Cena then got the chance to fight in a Ladder Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank. However, he first had to defeat Kane in a Stretcher Match, which was set up by Triple H. He won the duel, making him eligible for a singles match.

At Money in the Bank, John Cena defeated his rivals in a Ladder Match, making him the 12th WWE Champion (15x World Champion) of his career! The night after the PPV, we learned that John Cena would be the face of the WWE 2K15 cover. That same night, the Fatal 4-Way at Battleground was also determined and a bout took place where John Cena and Roman Reigns defeated Randy Orton and Kane. At Battleground, John Cena defeated Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, and Kane, keeping the WWE WHC belt from changing hands.

Triple H had another obstacle for Cena, which this time would be the returning Brock Lesnar. It was immediately established that the two would face each other at SummerSlam. There, he suffered a one-sided, painful defeat to The Beast, who inflicted over 10 german suplexes on him during the bout, ultimately stripping him of the WWE WHC belt.

A rematch took place at Night of Champions, with Cena winning the bout, but by disqualification. Seth Rollins interfered in the match, and it was because of this that Lesnar retained the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. John Cena's next target was Seth Rollins, but Dean Ambrose also wanted him. Two weeks before Hell in a Cell, Dean Ambrose defeated John Cena in a No Holds Barred Contract on a Pole match, allowing him to face Seth Rollins. As a consolation prize, John was given a bout with Randy Orton in a Hell in a Cell Match, where the winner would receive a title shot for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship belt. The eventual winner was John Cena and he would soon be the one to face Brock Lesnar once again. At Survivor Series, John Cena's team defeated The Authority, thus Triple H and Stephanie McMahon said goodbye to their reign over WWE. Cena was eliminated by Seth Rollins during the bout after Big Show knocked him out. The hero of Cena's team was Dolph Ziggler, who eliminated Triple H last, thanks to the debuting Sting. The Cenation leader then squared off against Seth Rollins, whom he defeated at TLC in a Tables Match, thus retaining his title as a contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship belt. A night later, Seth Rollins defeated John Cena in a Steel Cage Match, thanks to the early intervention of Brock Lesnar, who targeted John with three german suplexes and an F5. On Christmas RAW, which took place on December 22, John Cena defeated Seth Rollins in another rematch match. On the last RAW of 2014, Cena was forced to bring the Authority back on RAW after they wanted to damage Edge.

At the Royal Rumble, Brock Lesnar defeated John Cena and Seth Rollins in an incredible Triple Threat Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship belt. Shortly after the gala, John Cena began a new rivalry, this time with Rusev. On February 22 at Fastlane, Rusev was smarter and managed to defeat John Cena by technical submission, in other words, the referee stopped the match when John Cena lost consciousness. At WrestleMania 31, their rematch took place, which this time brought us a different winner, the leader of Cenation, who became the United States Champion for the fourth time in his career! On March 30, 2015, John Cena initiated his Open Challenge for the United States belt. That night on RAW, he defended the title in a bout against Dean Ambrose, whom he ultimately defeated. The following week brought us a bout with Stardust, which he also won. On April 13 on RAW in London, John Cena defended the title in a bout against Bad News Barrett. The next episode of RAW brought us a clash with Kane, which John Cena won by Attitude Adjustment. At Extreme Rules, Rusev lost for the second time to John Cena, this time in a Russian Chain Match. A week later, John Cena made another championship defense, this time against Sami Zayn. Ultimately, he was able to overcome it. On May 11 on RAW, Cena lost to Neville via disqualification as Rusev intervened in the bout. At Payback, John Cena defeated Rusev in an 'I Quit' Match, thus retaining the title once again. A night later, John Cena was attacked by the debuting Kevin Owens. At Elimination Chamber, the two faced off in a Champion vs. Champion Match, which Kevin Owens surprisingly won. They rematched at Money in the Bank, where this time the Cenation leader emerged victorious. This rivalry culminated in a fight for the United States belt at Battleground, which of course was won by John Cena. Then it was time for a feud with WWE Champion Seth Rollins. During SummerSlam, two titles were on the line, which eventually went to Rollins thanks to help from Jon Stewart, who attacked Cena. This ended his title run with the United States belt. At Night of Champions, there was a rematch for the United States belt, which was returned to John Cena for the fifth time! Another rematch took place on RAW the following night, but Rollins was unsuccessful in his attempts to take the title. At a special event at Madison Square Garden, John Cena defeated Seth Rollins in a Steel Cage Match. Since John Cena didn't have another challenger, he looked for one in the US Open Challenge at Hell in a Cell. When it came down to it, the challenge was answered by the returning...Alberto Del Rio. To the surprise of others, the Mexican defeated John Cena and claimed the United States belt!

John Cena went on hiatus after this PPV and returned literally at the end of the year. On December 28 on RAW, he faced Alberto Del Rio in a rematch bout for the United States belt. He won the fight, but by disqualification. On the last day of 2015, John Cena visited SmackDown, where he stood ringside during Kalisto's bout with Alberto Del Rio. With his help, Luchador was able to enjoy a victory over Del Rio.

On January 7 on RAW, John Cena announced that he would have to undergo shoulder surgery, which would keep him out of the ring for about six months. He was able to make a one-time return at WrestleMania 32, where he and The Rock dealt with The Wyatt Family. After another long break, John Cena returned to the ring on May 30th on RAW, where he immediately started a feud with AJ Styles. And so the two faced each other at Money in the Bank, where AJ Styles emerged victorious, thanks to the help of Gallows and Anderson. Later, Big Cass and Enzo Amore also got involved in the feud, which led to a Six-Man Tag Team Match at Battleground, where the guys defeated The Club. However, a few days earlier, a returning draft took place on SmackDown, resulting in the Cenation leader being moved to the blue weekly, along with his rival of course. The end of the feud came at SummerSlam, where AJ Styles picked up his second victory. After the fight, John Cena left his armband, then left the ring with a sad face.

John took a short break from the ring, and when he returned, he immediately earned a title shot for the WWE belt, which was held by AJ Styles at the time. At No Mercy, a Triple Threat Match took place where AJ Styles defeated John Cena and Dean Ambrose, thus defending the WWE Championship belt. After this PPV, John Cena went on another break, this time a longer one.

He returned on December 27 on SmackDown, where he made it clear that he would challenge for the WWE Championship belt at the Royal Rumble. That same night, it was revealed that he would face AJ Styles once again at the January PPV.

On January 10 on SmackDown, John Cena defeated Baron Corbin in a singles clash. Two weeks later at the Royal Rumble, John Cena defeated AJ Styles for the WWE Championship belt, making him a 13-time WWE Champion (16x World Champion)! This also meant he equaled Ric Flair's record for the number of times he held the major championship belts! At Elimination Chamber, John Cena lost the WWE belt in an Elimination Chamber Match after being eliminated by Bray Wyatt, who incidentally eventually won the match. Two days later, John Cena gained a chance to regain the championship but lost in a triple threat match after getting Sister Abigail. On February 21 on SmackDown, John Cena participated in a Battle Royal for the title challenger, but was eliminated by The Miz, whom he himself had earlier thrown out of the ring. And so began his feud with The Miz, where he was joined by Nikki Bella and Maryse. The rivalry itself was all about which pair of them was better. At WrestleMania 33, it was John Cena and Nikki Bella who defeated The Miz and Maryse, after which the Cenation leader proposed to his woman!!! After WrestleMania, the two went on a break from performing in the ring.

The Cenation leader returned to WWE for Independence Day, appearing on SmackDown on July 4. He began a feud with Rusev that same day, with the US and Bulgarian flags being the focal point. The two men had just faced each other in a Flag Match at Battleground, and the winner of that match was John Cena. On August 1 on SmackDown, John Cena faced a chance to win a title shot for the WWE Championship belt, but a defeat to Shinsuke Nakamura derailed those plans. After the show went off the air, Cena helped the Japanese man, who was attacked by Baron Corbin. And here John began another, this time much shorter show, with the finale at SummerSlam. In the opener of the show, Cena easily defeated Baron Corbin. It is worth mentioning that on the last SmackDown before this PPV, Cena was instrumental in losing the Money in the Bank briefcase that was in Corbin's possession. On August 21, John Cena scored his return on RAW, where he defeated The Miz and Samoe Joe in a tag team bout of the evening, with Roman Reigns as his tag team partner. Just one week later, they had their first tag team confrontation. The result was the long-awaited match that was to take place at No Mercy. The next two weeks saw more verbal confrontations between him and Roman Reigns. It was Reigns who had the final say, as John Cena failed to appear on the final RAW of the upcoming PPV. At No Mercy, Roman Reigns defeated John Cena, ending an era. After the fight, John Cena said goodbye to the fans who thanked him.

John Cena returned to the federation on November 19 for the Survivor Series gala, where he participated in a Traditional 5 vs. 5 Elimination Match. The Cenation leader represented the SmackDown colors during the gala. The result was that John Cena managed to eliminate Samoa Joe, while he was next to be eliminated by Kurt Angle. In the end, it was the RAW team that succeeded.

After a month-long hiatus, John Cena returned to RAW on December 25, where he was interrupted by Elias. After the man attacked him, he challenged him to a fight. The 16-time WWE Champion emerged victorious.

At the beginning of the year, we got news that John Cena would take part in a Royal Rumble Match. The Cenation leader returned on January 22 for the 25th anniversary of RAW, where he once again confronted Elias. This time, a brawl ensued, from which Cena's rival emerged better. At the Royal Rumble, John Cena came out at number 20, where he managed to eliminate 3 rivals, but the bout was not won. He was eliminated by the winner, Shinsuke Nakamura. A day later on RAW, John Cena defeated Finn Balor in an Elimination Chamber Match for the Universal Championship belt. On February 5 on RAW, Cena participated in a triple threat match where the winner would claim the final slot in the Elimination Chamber. However, he did not win the bout as Elias proved to be the smart one. Another RAW and another bout, this time with The Miz, where the loser of the match, The Miz, would be the first to go to the ring. The final RAW before Elimination Chamber brought us a 7-man Gauntlet Match between the participants. Cena lost in the first match as he had to take on Seth Rollins. At Elimination Chamber, Cena was eliminated by Braun Strowman and his next WrestleMania opportunity was wasted.

The Cenation leader did not give up, he moved to SmackDown to find his place at WrestleMania. He wanted to join the fight for the WWE belt at Fastlane, but first he had to defeat AJ Styles. Of course, he did that and thus got another chance to win the title. Despite this, Cena still did not win the match and his dreams of fighting at WrestleMania 34 were already minimal. On March 12 on RAW, Cena officially challenged Undertaker to a match at WrestleMania 34! For the next three weeks, Cena received no response despite his best efforts and went to the most important gala of the year simply as a fan. Of course, it wasn't quite as he said. After some time, he left the stands, which heralded his exit to the ring. And so it was, he went to the ring thinking that Undertaker would show up. However, that didn't happen, because instead of him appearing.... Elias. He started insulting everyone and everything in his style, so Cena decided to beat the crap out of him. And that's when we got Undertaker. It came down to a fight, or rather a squash, as Undertaker destroyed John Cena in less than three minutes!

At April's Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia, John Cena defeated Triple H in a singles match. His next WWE match was not until October 6 at WWE Super Show-Down in Autralia, where he teamed with Bobby Lashley to defeat Kevin Owens and Elias.

John Cena officially returned to television on January 1 on SmackDown, where he teamed with Becky Lynch, both of whom defeated Zelina Vega and Andrade Almas. On January 7 on RAW, John Cena announced that he would be appearing in a Royal Rumble Match. Later that same night, Cena teamed up with Seth Rollins and Finn Balor, the three guys managed to defeat Dean Ambrose, Drew McIntyre, and Bobby Lashley. A week later, John Cena faced a chance to win the title shot to the Universal belt, but failed to win the Fatal 4-Way Match. A week later, it was announced that John Cena had sustained an ankle injury, which ultimately ruled him out of the Royal Rumble Match. Of course, this was a storyline, as John Cena went to Canada to film Playing With Fire. He did not return until April 7 at WrestleMania 35, where he interrupted Elias' concert. Cena returned in the gimmick of The Doctor of Thuganomics, where he attacked him after his disses, ending everything with a one-off FU.

John did not return to WWE until July 22 at the RAW Reunion, where a lot of legends appeared. The Cenation leader opened the show, where he confronted the Uso brothers and Rikishi in the ring.

John Cena returned to SmackDown on February 28, where he announced in his hometown of Boston that WrestleMania 36 would take place without him. While he was on the ramp, the lights went out and when they came back on, ''The Fiend'' Bray Wyatt was standing next to him and pointed to the WrestleMania logo. John Cena made further appearances on March 13 and April 3 on SmackDown, where it was officially announced that the two would face each other in a Firefly FunHouse Match. At WrestleMania 36, The Fiend defeated John Cena, but the whole thing should be taken with a pinch of salt as it was more of a segment than a fight, but the pinfall was there, so the win went to Wyatt. The whole segment was basically about us reliving John Cena's past in WWE, where everything turned out completely different than it really did...

Personal Life:

When he was promoting the movie '12 Rounds' in 2009, John Cena announced his engagement to Elizabeth Huberdeau. They got married on July 11 of the same year, but after a good two years of marriage, things stopped working out for them. Cena filed divorce papers on May 1, 2012, which resulted in a divorce on July 18. Later that same year, John Cena got involved with Nikki Bella, who was also performing in WWE. John proposed to her on April 2, 2017 after they fought together at WrestleMania 33. They planned their wedding for May 5, 2018, but it didn't happen. On April 15, we received word from the couple that they had decided to separate. There he placed third overall, reaching the final episode of the season, which aired on June 24. When asked if he took steroids he replied: ''I can't say I haven't, but you can never prove to me that I have''. Interestingly, a day later in WWE footage, Cena's answer to the same question was ''Absolutely not''. Overall there was a lot of controversy with this.

John Cena's Philanthropy:

Along with the end of 2011, and the beginning of 2012, John Cena wore a black t-shirt that read 'Rise Above Hate' to promote WWE's 'Be a Star' campaign. The campaign was aimed at fighting other people's aggression over vulnerable people. In September and October 2012, John Cena wore a T-shirt that read 'Rise Aboe Cancer', in collaboration with Susan G. Komen, to promote the fight against breast cancer in women. Anyway, to this day, you can still see WWE promoting such a campaign during such a period.

In November 2016, Cena appeared in a 'We Are America' video that was created by the Ad Council, which was part of the 'Love Has No Labels' campaign.

Commercials:

Even before his wrestling career, he appeared in a Gold's Gym commercial. When he was a wrestler, John advertised YJ Stinger energy drinks in October 2003 and later appeared in a Subway commercial in 2006. For a while he advertised the ''signature collection'' of energy drinks and bars sold by American Body Builders.

In 2008, he appeared in a commercial for Gillette's "Young Guns" NASCAR campaign. A year later John Cena teamed up with Gillette for a campaign called "Be a Superstar" which also featured guest appearances from Chris Jericho and Cody Rhodes.

You may remember John Cena being called 'Fruity Pebbles' by The Rock, a reference to his colorful t-shirts. In 2011, it was a pretty popular chant at WWE galas and was heard a lot in their feud before WrestleMania. In 2013, John Cena was featured on a box of breakfast cereal...Fruity Pebbles :).

After The Rock called John Cena 'Fruity Pebbles' on WWE TV during their rivalry in 2011, the Cenation leader appeared on a box of breakfast cereal in 2013.

On October 13, 2016, a new commercial for Wonderful Pistachios debuted, with Cena providing the voice for an elephant character named Ernie.

On November 13, 2018, two Skyy Vodka commercials featuring John Cena were released.

Fashion:

While in WWE, he usually wore what was fashionable and stylish in the offshoot of hip hop culture. He started wearing ''throwback jerseys'' until the federation started producing his new ''Ruck Fules'' jersey. Whenever he came out to the ring in this jersey, WWE censored it to emphasize that it was ''too strong for TV'', this was just to emphasize the appeal of the merchandise. Until WrestleMania 21, he wore a chain with a large padlock, which he replaced with a chrome and diamond-studded ''Chain Gang''.

When the movie ''The Marine'' was being promoted it was John Cena who wore more military type stuff, like shorts, morticians and caps. After that promo, Cena had his own ''American Made Muscle'' shirts when he was a member of SmackDown. Then we had the familiar Cenation line of shirts, with multiple colors. Starting in late 2011, he wore a ''Rise Above Hate'' t-shirt. On September 17, 2012, he debuted a pink and black t-shirt that supported the fight against breast cancer in women. It was a collaboration with the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Just about every now and then we get different t-shirt designs, usually with two versions (two different colors).

Music:

In addition to his wrestling career, John is also a rapper. Cena performed ''Basic Thugonomics'', which was featured on the WWE Originals song list. He also recorded the song ''Untouchables'', which was featured on another track list, this time WWE ThemeAddict: The Music.
